C3 Podcast No. 36: Dr. Raphael Mechoulam In Memoriam

Updated: Apr 19, 2023

This article is brought to you by the new Higher Learning LV Core Cannabis course.

In No. 36 of the Cannabis Commerce + Chemistry Podcast, host Curt Robbins from Higher Learning LV and co-hosts Dena Putnam from Leafwize Naturals and John Bailey from the Mindset Genesis discuss the impressive career and pioneering research of Dr. Raphael Mechoulam.

Dr. Raphael Mechoulam: Humble Scientist

Mechoulam was a humble and charismatic scientist who dedicated his lifelong career to the investigation of cannabinoids produced by cannabis and hemp and the specialized network of microscopic cellular receptors and neurotransmitters in the human body called the endocannabinoid system (ECS).

He and his research team are responsible for discovering or detailing literally dozens of critical aspects of the human ECS, including a number of key cannabinoids and terpenes produced by cannabis and hemp.

Bailey praised the discovery by Mechoulam and his team of researchers of the endocannabinoid 2-AG in the early 1990s and spotlighted many of the roles played by this molecule (as well as its sibling endocannabinoid, anandamide). Bailey discussed how 2-AG is tied to endocannabinoid health, something that scientists call homeostasis. Putnam describes how Mechoulam described an entirely new set of more than 100 chemicals that are similar to endocannabinoids that he said may help humans unlock the mystery of human health, aging, and the eternal fight against disease.

Raphael Mechoulam: 1964

Robbins expressed his adoration for 1964, the year that Mechoulam discovered the Super Class terpene beta-caryophyllene (BCP) and the cannabinoids cannabigerol (CBG) and delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) (and his favorite year for the Chevrolet Corvette).

"Bailey praised the discovery of the endocannabinoid 2-AG in the early 1990s and spotlighted many of the roles played by this molecule."

Covered by Core Cannabis Course

All of the cannabinoids and terpenes discussed during this episode are part of Higher Learning LV's new course Core Cannabis. This deep dive course teaches students about the 25 most important cannabinoids and eight most common terpenes produced by cannabis and cites several studies conducted by Mechoulam and his colleagues, showcasing the importance of his work.
