C3 Podcast No. 37: Top Cannabis Industry Advantages

Updated: Apr 19

In No. 37 of the Cannabis Commerce + Chemistry Podcast, host Curt Robbins from Higher Learning LV and co-hosts Dena Putnam from Leafwize Naturals and John Bailey from the Mindset Genesis discuss the advantages possessed by the cannabis industry.

In episode No. 31, the three industry professionals talk about the major problems and roadblocks facing the cannabis industry. To counter balance, in this episode they bring to light the advantages and benefits that are helping push forward the legalization and normalization of cannabis as both medicine and also as an adult-use recreational substance.

Putnam addressed how the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency, or DEA, is evaluating opportunities to reschedule or deschedule cannabis. She also described how the FDA's recent fumbling of the ball regarding the regulation of CBD may be a blessing in disguise and might prod Congress to classify the CBD cannabinoid as a supplement, which she explains may be better in the long run.

"Hemp and cannabis industries are also pushing innovation in farming and cultivation, including the exciting and potentially revolutionary science of vertical farming."

Hemp, Vertical Farming, & Money

Bailey discussed a number of advantages held by the industry, including the potential environmental benefits of hemp cultivation and the thousands of products that can be created from hemp, including biodegradable plastics, biofuel, and sustainable fabrics.

He explained that the hemp and cannabis industries are also pushing innovation in farming and cultivation, including the exciting and potentially revolutionary science of vertical farming. Bailey emphasized the tremendous economic opportunities manifested by the cannabis industry in terms of job opportunities, ancillary services, and tax revenue for governments.

Cannabis Science & Research

Robbins delved into his adoration of science and research, discussing how dozens of new and important studies about cannabis and its constituent chemical compounds (cannabinoids, terpenes, and flavonoids) are published each month. He recommended that industry professionals pay more attention to this research and leverage what is contained in study data to gain a strategic advantage in their business.

He raised the controversial point that Schedule I is, technically, an advantage for many businesses—particularly small to midsize organizations. He said that cannabis businesses have until the fall of Schedule I to ensure that their companies can withstand the increase in competition that will inevitably result from the opening of interstate commerce after federal scheduling changes or is eliminated.

The simple industry modification of allowing American cannabis businesses to engage in interstate commerce will be a game changer and significantly alter the landscape for all cannabis businesses.

"Putnam believes consumers are smarter than given credit and more concerned with the quality of products and less about a celebrity musician or sports hero behind a brand."

Cannabis Consumers Are Smart

Putnam emphasized that American farmers are among the best in the world and that this existing expertise can be conveyed to hemp and cannabis. She said she believes that consumers are smarter than given credit and that they are more concerned with the quality of products and services and less about whether a celebrity musician or sports hero is behind a brand or product.

All of the cannabinoids and terpenes discussed during this episode are part of Higher Learning LV's new course Core Cannabis.
