Luteolin Research

Updated: May 7

Luteolin is a flavonoid that is produced by cannabis/hemp/marijuana and other plant species. Research has demonstrated the potential anticancer, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory benefits of this flavonoid.

A 2019 study entitled "Luteolin, a Flavonoid, as an Anticancer Agent: A Review" that was published in the Biomedicine & Pharmacotherapy described luteolin as "a flavonoid found in different plants such as vegetables, medicinal herbs, and fruits."

The study found that luteolin exhibits anticancer efficacy against a number of manifestations of the disease, reporting that it "acts as an anticancer agent against various types of human malignancies such as lung, breast, glioblastoma, prostate, colon, and pancreatic cancers."

This study also revealed details about the mechanisms behind this flavonoids significant anticancer benefits, noting that “it blocks cancer development in vitro and in vivo by inhibition of proliferation of tumor cells, protection from carcinogenic stimuli, and activation of cell cycle arrest," adding that luteolin induces apoptosis "through different signaling pathways."

A 2019 study entitled "Apoptosis Induced by Luteolin in Breast Cancer: Mechanistic and Therapeutic Perspectives" that was published in the International Journal of Phytotherapy & Phytopharmacology determined that luteolin has demonstrated "an outstanding therapeutic potential in the treatment of breast cancer." The researchers concluded that this flavonoid may serve as "an effective and safe therapeutic agent in diminishing breast cancer."
