A September 2022 study entitled "Hemp (Cannabis sativa subsp. sativa) Chemical Composition & the Application of Hempseeds in Food Formulations" that was published in the journal Plant Foods for Human Nutrition explored the biochemical nature and potential value as food of the seeds produced by hemp.

"This review intends to promote the further in-depth investigation of approved hemp plants and expand the range of hemp seed adoption in the functional foods field," proclaimed the study's authors.

The study reported that hemp has been cultivated "since ancient times" based on its nutritional and medicinal value. The intent of this research was to "map the scientific literature concerning the main functional components and the chemical composition of [the] hemp plant."

The research identified "the most pivotal part" of the hemp plant as the "edible fruits" that are the seeds.

The researchers explained how it is "generally acknowledged that each organ of the hemp plant embodies a valuable source." The research identified "the most pivotal part" of the hemp plant as the "edible fruits" that are the seeds (sometimes called hempseeds).

Hemp Seeds Deliver Nutrition

"Hemp seeds are rich in easily digestible proteins, fats, polyunsaturated fatty acids, and insoluble fiber, which are of high nutritional value," reported the study. It explained that these nutritional benefits are great enough to have "increased researchers' interests in hemp seed-containing foods."

Rich in Omega-3 & Omega-6

Among the elements of greatest value produced by hemp seeds are the omega-3 and omega-6 essential fatty acids (EFAs). Particular diseases and conditions involve a deficiency in these EFAs, making supplementation from rich sources such as hemp seeds of particular value to tens of millions of North Americans.

The significant and multi-layered nutritional value delivered by hemp seeds means that they function as both "an indispensable [food] ingredient" and a "significant supplement."

The research noted that the significant and multi-layered nutritional value delivered by hemp seeds means that they function as both "an indispensable [food] ingredient" and a "significant supplement." The study explained that this supplementation involves many product types, including "bakery food, drinks, snacks, and culinary products."
