Since the dawn of its use, cannabis has had a reputation for increasing appetite in humans—sometimes in significant and arguably comic ways. Colloquially referred to as "the munchies," this pronounced state is complex in its biochemical underpinnings. In fact, while some marijuana-based cannabinoids increase appetite (scientists dub such substances as orexigenics), others actually squelch the desire to eat every Dorito and Oreo in the house (anorectics).
