Core Cannabis Course: Terpinolene

Updated: Mar 24, 2023

Welcome to homework assignment CCC 1.34 of the Core Cannabis Course from Higher Learning LV. In this assignment, students learn about terpinolene, a terpene that has been found to deliver antifungal, antioxidant, and anticancer qualities. Terpinolene is one of the eight super class terpenes identified in the 2022 peer-reviewed research study as being the most common in North American cannabis cultivars.

In the assignments that follow, students are exposed to an in-depth analysis of terpinolene involving the most recent peer-reviewed scientific research, including its aroma profile and the potential medicinal benefits delivered by this terpene.

What is Terpinolene?

Terpinolene, one of the eight super class terpenes, is known for delivering a fresh, piney aroma and a sweet citrus flavor. It is produced by a range of popular cannabis cultivars, including Jack Herer and Super Lemon Haze and is known for delivering calm and relaxation (depending on the other terpenes and cannabinoids present).

Like others in the super class category, terpinolene is one of the most common terpenes in cannabis/hemp/marijuana. Similar to other cannabis terpenes, terpinolene is never encountered in isolation in the wild. Instead, it combines with many other terpenes (and other chemicals, including esters and ketones) to produce unique and multi-layered fragrances that are characteristics of particular cultivars and individual plants.
