Cannabis Flavonoids: An Overview

A 2016 study entitled "Flavonoids: An Overview" that was published in the Journal of Nutritional Science explored the medicinal efficacy of flavonoids. Although this study was not focused on the particular flavonoids produced by cannabis and hemp, it does lend valuable insight into the characteristics of this class of phytomolecules.
Despite their name, flavonoids do not lend flavor to the plants like hemp and cannabis that produce them. Rather, the Latin root of the word, flavus, literally interpreted means yellow and is commonly loosely interpreted to mean pigment.

Functionally, the colorful display of flavonoids provides UV radiation protection and attract insect and human pollinators that help ensure the propagation of the species. Flavonoids have been described as the red-headed stepchild of phytomolecules produced by hemp and cannabis.

These natural products are well known for their beneficial effects on health and efforts are being made to isolate the ingredients so called flavonoids.
